Chicken Creek Coffee Company
Chicken Creek Coffee Company is located in beautiful Smithers BC which is nestled under the Hudson Bay Mountains. The company is owned and operated by Kathy and Ed Hildebrandt who have been in the coffee business since 1994.
Our love for a good cup of coffee started many years ago and after many coffee bar visits (especially while on holidays) we decided to open our own coffee bar. In 1993 the coffee craze was just getting started and we decided we wanted to be a little different.
After much research we realized coffee crops were heavily sprayed and many coffee producers were not paid fairly for their work. We wanted to feel good about the products we sold. This helped us decide to use only organically grown coffees. By purchasing only Certified Organic coffee beans which have strict guidelines, we were assured the families and growing communities were benefiting by not using chemicals and that a fair price was paid for their hard work.
Our first location opened in March 1994 in Fleetwood BC. We offered superior customer service, on-site fresh roasted organic coffee beans, served organic coffees and cappuccinos, fresh muffins, scones, light lunches and decadent deserts. We operated the business with our three daughters. As the business grew we soon had seven employees.
We custom roasted coffee beans for many clients locally and as far away as Jasper, Alberta. We loved the business but sold it in December 1998 when we moved to Smithers.
After moving to Smithers we missed the coffee business. It was also difficult to find fresh roasted organic coffee beans up north so we continued purchasing our green beans from our supplier and roasted our coffee at home in very small batches.
In 2005 we decided to open a roast shop. We wanted to offer the freshest roast possible and we wanted to let our customers choose the level of roast and the type of bean that best suits their taste.
We are a small batch artisan roaster. We chose to go with a traditional style roaster where we roast by sight, smell and sound. Each roast gets our personal attention. We chose an electric roaster so the customer is assured there are no harmful gases flowing across the beans.
To ensure freshness, coffees are only roasted as orders come in and roasted coffee is not warehoused. At Chicken Creek Coffee Company we carry high quality specialty grade coffee beans from countries such as Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Sumatra, El Salvador and more.
We have a line of retail ready beans or we can assist you in choosing a roast that will suit your taste.
